We take a look at B-town public kisses... some intentional, some not... some pecks and some lip-locks... but which created huge controversies.
Shilpa Shetty – Richard Gere
Can we forget this incident? Shilpa Shetty was preaching safe sex to truck drivers for the prevention of AIDS. She had Hollywood actor Richard Gere for company, who also supports the cause. On coming to the stage, Gere publicly embraced Shilpa. But what happened next took everyone by surprise. Gere planted kisses on Shilpa’s cheeks right there on the stage. The incident obviously didn’t go down well with the Indian fundamentalists who took to protesting against the actress.
Rakhi Sawant – Mika
This was the most entertaining controversies of all. But more than anything, this was a publicity tool that drama queen Rakhi Sawant and Mika used to their benefit. Rakhi Sawant was a guest at Mika’s birthday party. After cutting the cake, Mika kissed Rakhi in ecstasy, in the presence of all the guest and media shutterbugs. Rakhi created a big issue out of this to gain optimal media attention.
Kareena Kapoor – Shahid Kapoor
Most popular of them all ... Kareena-Shahid’s tongue-twisting tale made quite a controversy! It was at the time when Kareena and Shahid were dating. The two were caught cozying up to each other at a pub. So lost were the two lovers that they didn’t care or notice the paparazzi taking their pictures. The news and pictures made headlines on tabloid front-pages. Their kiss tale was the hottest talk of the town. The Kapoors denied being part of the clip. But there was no one to buy it.
Pooja Bhatt – Mahesh Bhatt
Tagged as the controversy king in the 80s and 90s era, Mahesh Bhatt committed a scandalous act when he shot with daughter Pooja for a magazine cover. But this father-daughter duo didn’t pose like the normal papa-betis of the world but rather indulged in a lip-to-lip kiss. The act was considered very bold for the time.
Neha Dhupia – Richard Branson
If it was Richard Gere for Shilpa Shetty, it was Richard Branson for Neha Dhupia. On a show for a music channel, Richard Branson repeatedly kissed Neha. He didn’t stop at kissing but went ahead lifting Neha in his arms and tossing her upside down. Though Neha’s short skirt caused her a little embarrassment, she took the entire episode in a light vein. She jokingly said, “Next time I will make sure that I wear a long trouser.”
Bipasha Basu – Cristiano Ronaldo
Bipasha created news when she was caught on camera with football star Cristiano Ronaldo in such close quarters that it seemed like a kiss. Bipasha was already seeing John Abraham at the time and therefore her act with soccer sex god didn’t go down well with the Indian sensibilities.
Lashing out at the media portrayal of the incident Bipasha said, “For God’s sake, that photograph just cannot be taken seriously! Is that how newspapers define a lip-lock? I’m horrified. Suddenly, because of that photograph, I am internationally famous. But do I want fame at this cost?”
Padmini Kolhapure – Prince Charles
This incident dates back to 1980 but it created a huge controversy back then. This was during Prince Charles’ Indian tour. Padmini Kolhapure, who was just a budding actress, had a major crush on the Prince. And though the prince was surrounded by security guards, Padmini barged inside the security circle and planted a peck on Charles’ cheeks.
Shabana Azmi – Nelson Mandela
This might be a surprise to many but yes... it did happen! Shabana Azmi has been an active social activist. In 1993, Nelson Mandela was touring India. While attending a social event, Shabana went up to Nelson and kissed him. But little did Shabana know that a little kiss will spell such big trouble for her. The Muslim fraternity reacted strongly to her act.
